IF practice costs continue to outpace NHS income…

NHS IF home pane;

…how can you ever hope to get ahead?

Over 90% of dentists surveyed*, who spent the majority of their clinical time treating NHS patients, said that if practice costs continually outpaced NHS fee income, practice profits would be reduced. Nearly two thirds of these dentists cited the reduction as significant.

The British Dental Association has joined health associations and unions to urge a 'change of direction' on NHS pay restraint in the June 2017 Queen's Speech.

Groups representing all parts of the health workforce have written a joint letter to the Prime Minister to say the 1% cap is now putting safe patient care at risk.  The full copy of the letter can be found here

Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, the BDA's Chair of General Dental Practice said:

"At the same time that child tooth extractions are surging, the government seems intent on making NHS dentistry unsustainable. Dentists have seen a 35 per cent drop in earnings in the past 10 years. Today's uplift does nothing to address – let alone reverse – a drop that's already impacting on our ability to deliver the improvements in facilities, equipment, and training our patients deserve.

"We're living in uncertain times with the fall in the value of the pound, the rise in the cost of materials and the spiraling costs of regulatory compliance, and all compounded by the chronic under-investment in NHS dentistry.

"This is a devastating blow for dentists' morale; and these deep and sustained cuts have long ceased to be a question of 'pay restraint' or 'efficiency savings'." **

This, coupled with the uncertainty that Brexit brings, only adds to the growing financial pressures facing NHS dentists.
